TYPAR® Geocells
Cellular Confinement System for Earth and Water

Quick, easy and effective TYPAR® Geocells are made in the USA and can be used to protect property from flood damage and to meet local codes and state and federal regulations for sediment and erosion control. Depending on the fill, TYPAR® Geocells can be used for Flood and Water Control or Construction Erosion and Sediment Control.

How It Works
TYPAR® Geocells are a unique new confinement system of heavy-duty, time-proven TYPAR geotextile fabric cells constructed in a honeycomb formation. The water or soil application determines the product size needed; the application also determines the type of fill used because the fill influences the final hydraulic properties.

Folded into an accordion shape for easy transportation and a small logistical footprint, a TYPAR® Geocells unit is expanded on site and filled with a ballast material such as sand, stones, all soil types, mulch or other material. If desired, it can offer an excellent environment for re-vegetation. The three-dimensional cellular design allows for custom sizes, configuration and adaptability to a variety of terrains. No special training is needed to use the system.

Each TYPAR® Geocells functions as a single unit, and units can be solidly interlocked in various configurations without complicated joints or fear of their failure. Fill the TYPAR® Geocells units with equipment or by hand, using the supplied metal frame. Building self-supporting vertical or setback higher walls is easy; simply fill one unit, place another one on top and fill it.

Available in four sizes, the cellular confinement system is UV stabilized for two years; if covered, it is stabilized for longer. Patch, reinforce or replace it for easy repair.

Cost-efficient and project-effective TYPAR® Geocells are a stable, strong and durable barrier to earth and water movement.

Flood and Water Control
The fight to prevent flooding can cost millions of dollars in temporary dam raising or construction. And if floodwaters are not controlled, they can cost lives, millions in damaged property and an uncountable toll on livelihoods.

CASE STUDY - The Louisville office of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers contacted Fiberweb® to request the emergency installation of a TYPAR® Geocells / Defencell® Flood Wall system.

Sandbags are often used in flood fighting, but TYPAR® Geocells have a number of advantages over them. Filling sandbags is labor-intensive and, because workers tire, devastating choices often must be made as to which areas to protect. TYPAR® Geocells require much less labor than filling and stacking sandbags because earthmoving machinery can fill the cells with sand rapidly. In addition, TYPAR® Geocells are built as a vertical wall, while sandbags must be stacked in a pyramidal fashion, with a much larger footprint and more sand required.

Lightweight and easy to build, but strong, rugged and able to withstand differing volumes of water, units can be carried in by hand, brought in on equipment or dropped from helicopters without damage. Units can be stored out of sunlight for years without disintegrating, and they are resistant to vermin and mildew.

TYPAR® Geocells are effective as a rapid flood control barrier, and for levee construction, raising and repair.

Construction Erosion and Sediment Control
Water can erode the topsoil, wash away valuable plantings, create gullies and pollute downstream. It is a regulated problem, but current erosion control products are often overwhelmed by the soil and water movement they are supposed to prevent. TYPAR® Geocells are strong enough for the job.

The heavy-duty geotextile fabric construction of a TYPAR® Geocells unit adapts to the terrain while offering excellent structural strength and durability. In fact, the easy-to-construct cellular confinement system is well suited for irregular terrain, such as slopes, to reduce erosion and promote vegetation. Mulch or fill from the site can be used. Water filters through while fill material and soil particles are retained by the geotextile. If erosion or sediment control ceases to be a problem, TYPAR® Geocells can be emptied and used again.

TYPAR® Geocells are effective as a mudslide/debris flow barrier, sediment pond berm, check dam, filter screen for pond spillways, mulch berm, sediment trap filter berm, silt screen, dewatering filter, and for erosion control on slopes and channels.
